Cancer patient’s xbox stolen!

xboxThere’s inhumane, and then there’s despicable, but unfortunately for a 17-year old cancer patient receiving treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, he knows all too well about both of them. A Vermont-based teenager had been suffered from osteosarcoma, bone cancer in the leg, and was “recovering from surgery” a few hundred miles away from home. Apparently, someone(s) the family actually knew broke into their home while they were obviously away, and proceeded to jack his Xbox 360 as well as “over $1,000 worth of games and DVDs” while they were at it. Local police suggest that they “do have some good leads involving current and former students at local high schools,” and while none of the culprits have been apprehended just yet, folks have been more than generous in helping Jeff return to some state of normalcy by donating funds to help with family expenses, and one individual actually dropped off a new Xbox 360 console for a local radio station to deliver.

Battlefield around the corner

trojan

Troy Hurtubise, the Hamilton-born inventor who became famous for his bulky bear-protection suit by standing in front of a moving vehicle to prove it worked, has now created a much slimmer suit that he hopes will soon be protecting Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan and U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

He has spent two years and $15,000 in the lab out back of his house in North Bay, designing and building a practical, lightweight and affordable shell to stave off bullets, explosives, knives and clubs. He calls it the Trojan and describes it as the “first ballistic, full exoskeleton body suit of armour.”

Using the hard-learned lessons of his Project Grizzly experience — a 20-year odyssey that included a National Film Board documentary, an appearance on CNN and personal bankruptcy — he’s ready to start selling his newest idea.

Already, he says, the suit has stood up to bullets from high-powered weapons, including an elephant gun. The suit was empty during the ballistics tests, but he’s more than ready to put it on and face live fire.

The whole suit — which draws design inspiration from Star Wars, RoboCop, Batman and video games — is made from high-impact plastic lined with ceramic bullet protection over ballistic foam.

Its many features include compartments for emergency morphine and salt, a knife and emergency light. Built into the forearms are a small recording device, a pepper-spray gun and a detachable transponder that can be swallowed in case of trouble.

Dangling between the legs, that would be a clock.

22% of Windows installs are NON-Genuine

www.american.edu

Since WGA launched in July 2005, over 512 million users have attempted to validate their copy of Windows, Microsoft said. Of those, the non-genuine rate was 22.3 percent. 56,000 reports have been made by customers of counterfeit software, which grants that user a free replacement copy of Windows.

Microsoft disclosed Monday that over one in five Windows installations were deemed non-genuine through the company’s Windows Genuine Advantage program, which requires users to validate their operating system before downloading updates from the company.

Google forgets to renew Google.de

google.de

Reports are coming in from Germany that Google.de was down “for many hours” yesterday. We’re trying to confirm the reason, but it appears to be because Google forgot to renew the Google.de domain name. It expired and someone registered it. While the site was down the site showed a standard domain name registrar parked page.

Some interesting comments on this topic from other blogs:

How did the site that parked the domain give in so easily…I would have expected an attempt to make a fortune out of this situation. Or is it possible?

I find this crazy. How can Google with so many domains in its control, not have a robust system of renewals? How can the registrar having Google as a client, not alert Google on phone, in case email did not work?

Netbuzz upgrade

Hi there folks. NetBuzz just got it’s first upgrade. If your not following, we covered it a few weeks ago. Netbuzz has introduced some new techniques to read feeds and additions to the general usage of the site. The most prominent of them would be the tooltip that pops up when you hover over a story. A pretty neat way to scan a article. Here is a screen shot of what it looks like. Rather visit the site to see it action.

There are much more in the pipe line for NetBuzz. Exciting stuff really. I’ll keep you posted on whats next and whats new, all coming very soon.
