So how popular is Twitter in SA?

How many Twitter users are there in South Africa? Fuseware just made available their latest SA Twitter report, which has some very interesting facts:

  • Number of Active* SA Twitter users: 55000
  • Monthly tweets from SA: 1.5 million
  • Twitter web penetration: 4.5% of SA sites reference Twitter
  • Twitter SA site popularity: 7th most visited website in SA
  • Average Twitter followers for SA: 115
  • Average friends for SA: 122
  • Average total tweets per user for SA: 346
  • Percent of protected accounts: 0.38%
  • Percent of geo-location enabled accounts: 12.96%
  • Percent of Twitter verified accounts: 0.014%
  • People hardly use Twitter.com directly for posting tweets, with only 26% logging into the site to post updates.
  • The most popular Twitter client is TweetDeck, with 10% of all SA tweeters using it.

  • SA mostly tweets at night, between 7 and 8 pm. Many also tweet first thing in the morning, and over lunch.

    So how accurate are these statistics? I mean our population is 48m, how can only 55k piple be tweeting? Did you only count accounts with a geographic location indicating rsa or did you have a register from twitter which actually shows the exact number of people tweeting in rsa?

    Interesting insights. But this proves that Twitter is yet to go mainstream in South Africa . I use tweetdeck and i am always on twitter and i agree with all the statistics.

    I also run alterNATIVE Republic ,a start-up inspired by twitter and how it can be used as a tool for business growth.

    Herbert – I reckon they are tracked using IP addresses, and location services. But I think these numbers have increased a lot in the past few months.

    I think these numbers have probably grown a lot by now Tendai. For example, Jujuday became the second highest trending topic on 12 November, and that was WORLDWIDE. South Africans and SA businesses are opening up to twitter in a big way.

    55000? questionable. What are the latest numbers in terms of twitter usage in South Africa. I mean DJ Fresh has over 10 000 followers alone.

    Hi, the above stats are really old. We have heard that there are over a million users in SA on Twitter. Active accounts we do not know… I’m sure its a few hundred thousand.
