Android Best Selling Smartphone OS in the US

Nielsen recently unveiled their latest smartphone statistics based on sales data of the past 6 months. What’s also significant about this data is that it includes the first month of iPhone 4 availability. Now if you take the phenomonal sales figures of the iPhone 4 (1.7 million iPhone 4s were sold in its first three days of availability), it should tell you something about how well Android as a whole is doing. There is a definate upwards trend in the uptake of Google‘s mobile operating system, and it has finally surpassed both iPhone and Blackberry in recent sales figures.

What should be taken into account however, is that Android is used by a variety of manufacturers spread over many different models. “iPhone” consists of iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Among overall market share it is still Blackberry who is king, but it remains to be seen if they can hold on to that title.

Apple’s exclusive carrier approach is hurting them in developer and third world markets. They should just make the iPhone available on any cellular network. Google’s open approach is clearly paying dividends.

Wow then Apple is doing really well to have those numbers on just one carrier. Imagine what this graph will look like if they release iPhone to other carriers.

Looks like Blackberry is soon going to be challenged for its status as king, very interesting but I must admit I love my Blackberry 9700 Bold, works like a charm for both my business and recreational use

I must say Blackberry is still a very good value fo rmoney device, especially in SA. I expect to see Blackberry take off even more, especially now that they are advertising more to consumers, and they are making cheaper devices. All round win.

You will see that in many countries Apple has dropped their exclusive contracts – in fact the US is one of the last remaining countries that only have a one carrier deal with Apple.

In Europe especially iPhone is typically available on more than one network, and in some cases even three networks within one country.
