Motribe, the brainchild of South African entrepreneurs Vincent Maher and Nic Haralambous, recently launched mobile payments in India with a new feature – the Tribe promotion tool. The social networking site that went live on Friday, promises users the ability to create a community, design the website, blog and share photographs entirely on a mobile phone device.
To enable the live tool in India Motribe implemented their brand new mobile payment system and virtual currency called Motribe Coins. At the time of launch, Motribe supports Aircel, Airtel, Idea, Reliance, Tata, Uninor and BPL with Vodafone to follow shortly.
India is a huge market for any company with about 900 million mobile phone subscribers and is one of, if not the best, launch pad for any mobile product.
Co-founder and CEO, Nic Haralambous said that “With the launch of mobile payments we are emphasising our commitment to being a mobile-first company. We have a large collection of users in India and the right partners who have provided us with the ability to launch mobile billing and payments in the market. The focus for Motribe right now is creating the best possible tools for our Tribe owners.”
