ExpenZa – South Africa’s New Personal Finance App

Published by on Nov 28th, 2011, 11 Comments

ExpenZa, a smartphone app aimed at helping people make smarter decisions about their finances, was recently launched at Mobile Web Africa 2011 by Apposition Consulting. The app automates expense tracking by intercepting the expenditure SMS message sent by various banks in South Africa and uses the information contained in that SMS to automatically populate a user’s expense list.

ExpenZa can be used without a bank’s SMS service by manually adding expenses, for example, keeping track of the cash in your wallet.  The app allows the user to create a monthly budget with different expense categories with a specific budget amount for each category.  The total spent for each category is made available to the user and therefore provides a continuous overview of spending throughout the month.  This helps users to make the necessary adjustments to stick to their budget.

The following South African banks are accommodated for automated expense tracking via SMS: ABSA, Capitec Bank, Discovery Card, First National Bank (FNB), Investec Bank, Standard Bank. More banks and additional features will soon be added to the current list including additional banks in other African countries.

ExpenZa is currently available as a free download on the Android market with a app for BlackBerry to follow shortly.

How long until the Blackberry app?

  • Richard

It’s very high on our priority list, but we’re a cash strapped startup, so it all depends on when we get investment.  Because of that we unfortunately can’t give a time frame for the BB release.

Any plans for an iPhone app and when?

  • Richard

Sorry no, not in the near future.  iOS doesn’t allow apps to access incoming SMS messages, so for now the Fruit Phone is not in our near term plans.  In the longer term we’ll move to other technologies for retrieving the data, so then it’s on the cards again.

    interesting!

Interesting idea. It’s a pity Apple locks the OS down so you can’t intercept SMS’s

Any place we can donate for future development costs, great application with great function! I’m more than willing to pay!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!  Send me a mail at richard [at] apposition.co.za if you really want to send us money ;)

We’re planning a premium version with extra functionality that will be a paid app. For now we want to make the free version as useful as possible first.

Great App. Android Market indicate it is incompatible with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. However manage to download from Samsung. Can’t wait for additional functionality.
