Don’t need the new iPad? iPad 2 gets price cut in SA

Published by on Mar 9th, 2012, 3 Comments

Not everyone needs the brilliant new Retina display on the “new” iPad, and the iPad 2 is more than enough for many. Then it is good news that Core (and one of their resellers Digicape) has decided to drop the price of the iPad 2 in SA, across all models. Even though Apple is going to keep the low end 16GB iPad 2 concurrently on sale for the time being, these price cuts mean that you can still get hold of 32GB and 64GB models.

Here is some of the new pricing for the iPad 2:

Obviously Core is doing this to get rid of existing stock before the new iPad launches. Apple’s official rollout of the iPad 3 is middle March for US, UK and a few other territories, with the rest of the world getting it on 23 March. Unfortunately South Africa was not officially on that list of the “rest” of the world. Luckily FNB did confirm that they will be getting the iPad 3, hopefully sooner, rather than later.

Our advice? Wait for the $100 price drop on the 16GB iPad 2 models ($400 in the US), if you really dont need the latest iPad. Those lower priced models should reach SA soon enough.

Slashed by R500? The price was reduced by $100 in the US (about R760) so really Core is just increasing their already ridiculous profit margin (which comes with zero after sales support unlike Apple in the US where the service is legendary)

We are being exploited in SA. Apple hardware costs a fortune and the support is really bad. Had a problem with my iPad and they wanted me to wait a week just to diagnose the problem. I flew to london on business and visited the iStore in Oxford street. Got a replacement iPad within 10min.

I can honestly say that Apple products are fun toys, but at the price there’s always something out there that’s better value for money. Why there hasn’t been an Apple SA consumer boycott is beyond me :P
