OUYA: A New Kind of Gaming Console

Published by on Jul 12th, 2012, 1 Comment

One of Kickstarter’s latest projects, OUYA has already surpassed its $950, 000 funding goal to reach almost $4, 000, 000 from over 30, 500 excited and supportive backers.

OUYA (pronounced ooh-yah) is an inexpensive game console for the TV that is built on Android open source technology. Most games currently focus on the mobile and web platforms because they are less expensive and easier to develop than those for television. Founder Julie Uhrman says that OUYA aims to get gamers back to the television as it allows any developer who wants to build a game for TV do so with its open source technology.

The OUYA features a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.0, 1GB of RAM 8GB of flash storage, HDMI, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a wireless hardware controller. There is no need to purchase a license or an expensive SDK. OUYA doesn’t require a lot of money or credentials, just good ideas.

This has the potential of changing the gaming industry forever. Will be really interested to see what kind of mods the hackers can pull out of it!
