Samsung Report: 132 Pages of iPhone Envy

Published by on Aug 8th, 2012, 10 Comments

Say whatever you will about the whole Apple / Samsung court case, it is becoming very clear that Samsung had a clear case of iPhone envy at one point. Apple today released this 132 page evidence document to the court, and as such, it got released to the public. Titled “Relative Evaluation Report on S1, iPhone”, this document by Samsung’s Product Engineering Team in 2010 gives some pretty harsh criticism to the Galaxy S’s interface, and compares it step by step to the iPhone.

As you browse through the document, the Samsung engineers often give a “Directions for Improvement”, which has slowly started filtering into Samsung’s later skins over Android. The opposite is also true though – many of the elements of Android which were considered to “complex” have also found their way into iOS, for example the pull down notification tray.

The final thing to remember about this kind of document is that it does not prove Samsung copied the Apple look and feel – it can be argued that this is simply part of a thorough product comparision procedure, which is pretty standard in any research and development environment. For all that we know, there might be a similiar document comparing Samsung’s TouchWiz with Windows Phone as well.

So what do you think? If this the kind of document that will give Apple a slam dunk? Or do you think Apple is barking up the wrong tree?

I love the way they make it seem as if Samsung phones still Run on windows Mobile… Apple and their cheap tricks again… If one person wins the market, we all lose… Imagine the only cellphone or tablet around is an Apple product… I dont see much innovation happening then… Apple is fast becoming the OLD Microsoft… Sad that people dont seem to see that…

    This.

Apple has set a standard back when the first iPhone was introduced, but they should make peace with the fact that when you set a standard, competition will make all the effort to be on par with that standard or even best it. Apple reeks of anti-competitive practices and it boggles my mind that patents they are granted are granted in the 1st place. “slide to unlock” – Seriously? I’m a lover of all things tech, but this is ridiculous.

Edit: Also take to mind how iOS has changed during the years because of influence from other OS’s like Android and Windows Phone 7. Yet you don’t see the other parties suing Apple for taking inspiration from their concepts and features.

Side note: Can’t wait for Microsoft Surface :D

I believe that Samsung is already preparing for the appeal, leaving Apple to show their hand and leaving Judge Koh to carry on with her dubious decisions. In the mean time Samsung is using the case to show the public how frivolous Apple is with this case. I have not met any person that is swayed towards Apple but changing platform but I have heard of a lot of people moving over to Android because of Apple suing.

Truly Chinese have always been famous for their cut an paste “innovations” methods and sell their product cheaper.. i believe there’s different with competing and stealing then claiming!!!!

Samsung is Korean, not Chinese. :-)

That was an interesting read, but something is a bit stange in the document. Why would Apple refer to their phone as i-Phone when the correct spelling is iPhone? Even if the document was drawn up by lawers, this is clearly something Apple would address before submitting the document?

It is Samsung’s document. Not Apples.

I love my Samsung products, not much of an apple fan, think its a stupid product as you always needs itunes for anything you want to do with the phone, Did have an ipad, so useless and just lying around, use my S2 more than anything. Think apple must understand, tech is moving forward, don’t sue, just because you can’t keep up!!!!
