According to a report by Tech Crunch, Facebook has officially launched ”Sponsored Results,” a new type of advertising that appears when you conduct a search for a person, page or app on the social network’s site.
Facebook initially confirmed the launch of these ads, that sees the company following in the footsteps of Google, in a statement saying, “We recently started rolling out Sponsored Results more broadly.”
Since then, a spokesperson for the company told Venture Beat that “We have launched a feature that surfaces sponsored results along with the organic results when people are looking for things on Facebook. We try to show people apps and pages they’ll be most interested in.”
The ads appear before other search results, which can be removed by clicking on a small x located toward their top right corner once seen.
At the moment, while businesses cannot direct users off-site with the ads yet, they can appear above the top organic result making them powerful for diverting traffic from competitors.”
Facebook has also mentioned that Sponsored Results will be available to marketers on its Power Editor feature at some point on Wednesday.
