Edgars has moved one step ahead of its competitors with a new shopping app aimed at getting customers engaged while inside their stores. That’s something close to my heart, and so I had to try it out.
Edcon commissioned 3fifteen – a top South African software development house, to make the application. While I was a recruiter a long while back, they were my client and I recall how difficult it was to find a developer good enough to get into their company. The app is, as expected, very good.
Essentially, it is an iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7 app that allows shoppers to scan a product’s barcode and get information like the price, stock levels in other stores and store information. You have to register, but once you do, you can view your Edgars account balances, credit limits and installment amounts.
After registering (had to give all kinds of details here) on the SmartShop app, the rest is really easy. Although Edgars has only GPS to locate users, which is horribly inaccurate in malls and in general, users of the app can easily scan barcodes and then follow the screens to finding out more about the item. You can even order a product on the app, although since I don’t have an Edgars account, I couldn’t find out if I could actually pay for the product as well.
While the app works perfectly and looks fine, one thing is for sure, employees of Edgars have no clue about it. I asked one or two floor staff if they could help me and they didn’t even know it existed. This is just plain bad – staff should be telling people to load the app onto their phones. Just imagine, no-one will bother them asking if a product is available or how much it costs – the app can handle that and so much more.
