According to YouTube, the historic jump by Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner that took place on Sunday 14 October broke a record for the  “live stream with the most concurrent views ever on YouTube”, with a number of about 8 million views.

Baumgartner completed the record breaking jump from the edge of space, after flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters in a helium-filled balloon, all of which was captured on video for the world to witness.

Red Bull Stratos, after which the mission was named and who uploaded a video writes that:

“Felix reached a maximum speed of 1,342.8 km/h (833mph) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.”

One of the primary goals of the mission was to test how humans and their space suits would react to emergency exits at such high altitudes, useful for civilian space travel.

According to USA Today, The mission marks yet another scientific advancement in aerospace by a private company, that is filling the gap now left by state-sponsored space initiatives that were once initiated and funded by American and Russian programs. Currently, it is projects like Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic that remain dedicated to putting civilians in space.
