Amazon has recently announced the launch of a new feature called AutoRip, currently available to customers in the U.S. only from 10 January.
AutoRip hopes to boost digital sales and encourage customers to use its Cloud music service.
AutoRip gives customers a free version in MP3 format of a CD they have purchased from the online retailer. The digital copies, available for more than 50, 000 titles, are also available for CDs that customers have purchased over the past 15 years.
Once a CD has been bought, all the tracks are automatically added to the individual’s Cloud Player. Once in the cloud, tracks can then be streamed or downloaded.
Amazon founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, says the following of the new feature “What would you say if you bought music CDs from a company 15 years ago, and then 15 years later that company licensed the rights from the record companies to give you the MP3 versions of those CDs … and then to top it off, did that for you automatically and for free?”
