After months of rumours involving Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Apple, Vice President of Google Geo Brian McClendon has announced that the company has closed the acquisition of community-based traffic and mapping app Waze.

“We’ve all been there: stuck in traffic, frustrated that you chose the wrong route on the drive to work,” says McClendon, “but imagine if you could see real-time traffic updates from friends and fellow travelers ahead of you, calling out “fender bender…totally stuck in left lane!” and showing faster routes that others are taking.”

Google will work closely with the Waze community and developers to enhance Google Maps and “help users outsmart traffic” and ensure that they have everything they need to “grow and prosper”. In turn, Waze will benefit from Googles advanced search capabilities.

In the blog McClendon confirms that the Waze development team will remain in its home country of Israel, for now.

“The Waze community and its dedicated team have created a great source of timely road corrections and updates,” concludes the announcement, “We welcome them to Google and look forward to working with them in our ongoing effort to make a comprehensive, accurate and useful map of the world.”
