WhatsApp’s old, text-driven ‘Status’ feature has made a return in the latest beta of the app, where it has been renamed ‘My About’.
WhatsApp has enjoyed a fair amount of criticism over the past few weeks as a result of Facebook’s decision to integrate a Snapchat-style Stories feature into the app. Now, the latest beta version of the app has revealed that the app’s former, text-driven Status option will return in the near future.
Version 2.17.95 of the latest WhatsApp beta reveals that text-driven statuses will make a return in a new section called “My About”. Unfortunately, the feature will not have the same prominence as the app’s new, Stories-style feature will.
To return to using a text-driven status under ‘My About’, users will be required to head to the app’s ‘three-dot’ overflow menu, wherein the ‘My About’ section can be found on the Profile tab.
The feature will enable users to once again set a custom note, or choose from a plethora of pre-written messages such as Available, Busy, At School, or At the movies.
The latest beta update further changes the location from where users can append attachments to their messages such as pictures, video, or PDF files; the attachment menu – previously found on the upper right-hand corner – to an area next to the text field where one writes a message.
The update is, at present, locked to beta users, but could very well release to the public in short order. The app’s next major update is reported to include monetization tools for Facebook which will enable brands and businesses to chat directly to customers.
