One of the most fascinating aspects of Steve Jobs’s career was the creation of NeXT Inc. and the sequential pivoting of the company from hardware to software to acquisition. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the least documented. Many people may have hoped that his biography by Walter Isaacson entitled ”Steve Jobs” would have illuminated this period that defined a lot of the skills and practices that made Apple a success. However, it didn’t adequately deliver in that department.
This video is from a series called Entrepreneurs, that documents the creation of NeXT and may provide more information about this period in his life. The footage provides insight into the way in which Jobs interacts with staff, conducts a brainstorming session with specific goals and seeks out solutions and, of course his genuine passion and enthusiasm for his projects.
The opening line of the video says it all: “Steven Jobs figures heroically in the history of American entrepreneurship.”

While the full-length version of ‘The Lost Interview’ with former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs will be available on the 19th November, an exclusive teaser of the never before seen footage was revealed yesterday by What’s Trending.
The original hour long interview was conducted by author and journalist Bob Cringely during the making of his TV series ‘Triumph of the Nerds’ in 1995. In the end, only a part of the interview was used in the series and it was believed that the rest of it was lost. However, a copy of the VHS (remember those?) was recently found in the director’s own garage. With the help of modern technology, the tape was cleaned up, restored and put into context by Cringely himself. At the time of the interview Jobs was running NeXT, the computer company he had founded after leaving Apple.
In the interview Jobs talks about his pioneering days with Steve Wozniak when they built the Blue Box, the visits he made to Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and how it inspired the making of the Macintosh and his forced departure from Apple.
During the interview Jobs states: “We were on a mission from God to save Apple. I don’t care about being right. I just care about success.”
Steve Jobs died on the 5th October at the age of 56.

Unfortunately for Gmail, a video of their new upgraded version was accidentally revealed in a video on YouTube. Before Gmail could remove the video, a YouTube user had reposted it. Although the video had already spread, it has since been made private.
In the video’s introduction, presented by user experience designer Jason Cornwell, he says that: ”We’ve been hard at work to update Gmail with a new look and I’m excited to share with you some of the biggest improvements.”
The video reveals a number of more user-friendly features including a cleaner design, ability to adjust the size of label and chat areas, adaptability to fit any window size and new high-resolution themes. Conversations have also been redesigned for improved readability and includes the addition of profile pictures.
The search function has also been simplified, with a new search box that makes it easy to customise a search rather than users having to click through a number of search fields.

On 24 September, Apple opened the doors of its much anticipated Hong Kong store, the first in the city and its most expensive in the world. The opening of the sixth Apple store in China is part of the software giant’s plan to tap into the booming China market and push back on the city-state’s parallel market for counterfeit Apple products.
The store’s prime real estate position serves to attract Hong Kong natives, Chinese travellers and gadget enthusiasts for a genuine and unique Apple experience.
Here are some interesting facts about the new store:
YouTube has rolled out a brand new video editing feature on the site to enable users to make simple changes to their videos. The feature, that has been available in the service’s TestTube lab since last year, is designed to enable users to apply simple and easy quick fixes as well as some substantial changes to their videos after they have been uploaded. Users can edit their videos without the risk of losing view count, comments or existing links.
YouTube product manager, Jeff Toff, said the idea came about when ”we noticed a lot of the videos that were uploaded to YouTube could use some polish, some basic video editing.” There is even an option to change your existing soundtrack and trim footage.

We have already said in the past that the DStv Drifta is one great little device to have around, and we have actually named the iPhone app one of our favourite apps in SA right now. So just before the Rugby World Cup 2011, Multichoice has now made the app available to the Android folks as well.
Right now the device support is pretty limited – only the Galaxy S, Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab. It also checks whether the device is rooted – so you hacking users might have some trouble. You also need to get the little Drifta device, and the relevant DStv contract in place. Premium subscribers get Drifta access for free, while the lesser contracts need to pay R40 for it per month.
Good on Multichoice for releasing this right before the Rugby World Cup…
Get it here.
Update: Our sources inside DStv say support for the Desire, Desire HD and Wildfire S handsets coming tomorrow (9 Sept 2011).
Search giant Google is celebrating what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 65th Birthday with their second longest doodle to date. The Queen front man who died in 1991 is being honoured with a 98 second long animated video doodle appearing on Google’s homepage. The animation sees Mercury in a variety of crazy worlds and scenes inspired by his lyrics and famous music videos all to the hit song ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’. The animation begins with Mercury on stage with the rest of Queen with bright ‘Google’ lights and a hug crowd of fans. Mercury then ventures into an old style video game where he rides a tiger and shoots into outer space and appears in a number of his famous costumes.
The doodle, headed up by Jenniefer Hom, was a team effort and took about three months to create. “Considering how colourful Freddie’s career was, we wanted to create a doodle that was just as colourful,” said Hom. The team decided to go with the hit ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ because it was one of Queen’s top 10 hits of all time and was written by Mercury himself. The song also reflects the legacy and exceptional impact that Mercury and the band have left on the world of music. (more…)
