New reports claim that Samsung will begin producing ‘thousands’ of prototype, folding smartphones in the third quarter of 2017.

While many of us are looking forward to the revelation of Samsung’s next flagship effort in the form of the Galaxy S8, another highly anticipated product the company is reportedly developing could be seen by the third quarter of 2017.

ETNews reports that Samsung has ramped up plans to produce a foldable device with either a flexible or hinged display, and is planning to test such devices internally before “supplying them to their major customers such as mobile network providers”.

We’ve previously seen indication that the likes of Apple, LG, and Google have expressed interest in producing a foldable device, and while Microsoft’s long-rumoured Surface Phone might sport similar technology, it would Samsung is determined to reach the market first.

It has previously been reported that Samsung is working on foldable devices under the ‘Project Valley‘ moniker, which could be named ‘Galaxy Wing‘ upon reaching global consumers. Leaked patents have suggested that the South Korean company is actively seeking methods of converting a larger display into a more pocketable form factor.

It is unclear as to whether the company plans to reveal its foldable device as a transitional tablet to that effect, or whether it is seeking to recapture the magic of the flip phone; Samsung released a high-powered, flagship-grade clamshell in China late last year.
