The winners of the annual Startup Knight competition have finally been announced – and it truly is a testament to the amazing, innovative talent we have in South Africa.
Run by Byte Orbit, Startup Knight is a startup competition aimed at software-based tech startups and visionaries. This year, the competition was divided into two categories; Startups and Concepts. Both of these categories were over-flowing with entries with the competition receiving near 100 entries from across South Africa.
Eventually, 8 Startup and 8 Concept finalists were chosen. These included:
These 16 finalists were then required to pitch their ideas to a panel of carefully selected mentors – all respected tech entrepreneurs in their own right.
The mentors job was to assist the finalists in refining and finalizing their pitches for the following day, which would see them pitch their ideas at the final judging event. The finalists also got the opportunity to socialize and network at the Byte Orbit offices during the afternoon.
The final day of judging and pitching saw many innovative concepts and bright ides see the light. After the judges‘ feedback, it was clear to all that the competition was very tough and the winners would be chosen by a close call.
The winners‘ announcement took place at the Startup Knight Cocktail Evening at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cape Town. More than 100 guests attended and attendees included industry personalities, sponsors and press.

CEO of Byte Orbit, Amit Ramdath, spoke about his vision for Startup Knight and finally announced the winners.
In the Startup category, Micket was chosen as the winner. Micket uses a mobile ticket in a new, innovative way for creating and marketing events. This works by incorporating encrypted QR codes and 2D barcodes with brandable, electronic tickets. Micket is also connected to various social networks, thus marketing your event to your friends and follower on social media, too.
The winner of the Concept category was AirTaxi. The AirTaxi concept is to use your mobile airtime to pay your taxi fare. The concept of AirTaxi will especially come in handy when you don‘t have any cash or cards at hand.
Startup Knight received tremendous backing from both sponsors, corporates and industry personalities. Byte Orbit plans to run the growing competition again in 2014.
