Sony Pictures Animation has confirmed they’re presently working on an Emoji Movie, and have now released early plot details.
You know those yellow little faces with humorous expressions? No, we’re not talking about Minions. Sony have announced that an Emoji movie is in full swing, and have now released early plot details.
Sony Pictures Animation’s President, Kristine Belson, revealed the news as well as an early premise for the feature film. Read: Durex launches the first official safe sex emoji “Inside your phone, there‘s a secret world““ and we enter through the text app where we discover Emoji Valley, where the industrious Emoji live and work.” Belson revealed.
Belson further went on to to explain that the film’s narrative will be explored through the use of real-world apps such as (potentially) WhatsApp or Facebook. Hopefully, we can side-step Tinder on this one.
According to rumours, the premise of the movie will revolve around an emoji discovering a wider world beyond that of a smartphone, and will leave “Emoji Valley” to explore other apps.
Thus far, music streaming giant Spotify has confirmed a deal with Sony Pictures Animation that will see its mobile app tie in to the film’s narrative in some measure.
Sony has further confirmed that the script for the Emoji movie is set to be written by Anthony Leondis and Eric Siegel, with a release date slated for August 2017.
It’s presently unknown which emoji will end up appearing in the film, as Apple’s library alone consists of 93 faces in addition to symbols, flags and other visual icons. The choice of whether or not to throw a mention to Microsoft’s decision to fly the middle finger could be an interesting one, too.
Whether the Emoji movie will be able to replicate the same success seen with Despicable Me and its Minions spin-off film and shorts remains to be seen. Read: Apple finally rolls out “˜racially diverse‘ emojis
